今井荣作是日本广岛原爆生还者，一直没有告诉两个女儿这事。大女儿芳子在暑假兼职做导游时认识了香港作家李克强，并帮助他搜集原爆生还者及其第二代的资料。芳子男友木村真宗父母向今井提亲，今井不得不坦白说出芳子是原爆第二代，但木村仍深爱芳子，要和她结婚。这时候芳子妹妹京子无意发现芳子并非自己亲姊姊，而自己也是原爆的第二代。芳子知道后离家出走。芳子原是今井好友冈田正夫的遗腹女，今井收养了她；今井妻子玉芬则是冈田的中国情人，二次大战和平十年后她到日本找冈田，最后郤和荣作结婚生下京子。芳子发现自己已患了白血病，便决定把余生投入反核和平运动中，呼吁世人关注原爆生还者的命运，反对超级大国的核子竞赛。
